“Emoyeni” – meaning up in the air in Zulu. This was exactly how I felt when I arrived at the Manor house in Parktown earlier this year. Old world Victorian with a touch of Africa was the first thing I thought of when entering the house. I was greeted by a very friendly lady called Thandi, who is in charge of the marketing and who is actually originally from Gugs in Cape Town. We connected immediately discussing the mountains and things she misses from Cape Town.
After our heart warming chat, it was truly amazing to appreciate the picturesque views of Emoyeni that’s truly breath taking. I was so excited for our wine event to take place in September, I immediately went back to Cape Town and started planning.
After having such a fantastic event at 15 On Orange, we were very interested to know how Johanneburg would play off. The menu was hand crafted by Chef Ayanda, traditional South African flavours and products, but with a French flair twist as his signature style.
Nederburg Heritage Heroes was indeed the wine heroes of the evening and fitted in so perfectly with the beautiful Manor house. Our guests were treated with the double gold Veritas winner; wooded Sauvignon Blanc aka The Young Airhawk 2012, which pays tribute to Johann Graue’s son, Arnold who was renowned for his winemaking skill. Arnold died tragically in a light aircraft crash.
Poached prawn tails with cucumber jelly and spicy hollandaise as well as rare seared beef tenderloin, served on glazed honey & ginger butternut was served with this prize winner of a wine.
After the sun set, guests were shown to their tables for the evening which took place in two different rooms. The drawing room and the dining room were beautifully set up. The ambiance was truly special with wooden flooring and Victorian ceilings. Our Cape Masters of wine for the evening was Chris, who was an absolute treat. He told us the most interesting stories of each wine.
For the Amuse bouche we had the The Anchorman, a wooded Chenin Blanc, named after Nederburg’s founder Philippus Wolvaart, who bought the farm in 1791. This was paired with Beetroot cured Franschoek Salmon Trout, served with asparagus water cress salad , roasted coconut shavings and lime dressing.
Starters was the The Motorcycle Marvel, a Rhone-style blend, which honours the legendary winemaker Günter Brözel, who was cellarmaster at Nederburg from 1956 to 1989. He is known for his exceptionally high standards. Getting around on a 250cc BSA motorcycle, he checked on everyone and everything to ensure his exact demands were met. He is still alive today.
The Springbok Carpaccio served with wild rocket , roasted corn and red wine glaze worked beautifully together.
Our main course wine was The Brew Master, a Bordeaux-style blend, which commemorates brew master and tea specialist Johann Graue. Graue acquired Nederburg in 1937 and is believed to have created the foundation for excellence followed by his successors.
The main course was an absolute treat; Slow cooked Karoo lamb shoulder, herb roasted rack of lamb, vegetable pave, potato bake, baby spinach and natural jus. A gourmet South African feast!
Dessert wine was The Beautiful Lady, a Gewürztraminer, which takes its name from the description of Ilse Graue, the wife of Johann Graue.
Lots of tropical fruit notes to be paired with our koek sister, milk tart parfait, tea jelly, Van der Hum caramel, doughnut and homemade canned fruit.
Our guests really enjoyed the meals paired and will definitely return to Emoyeni for its fantastic Jazz Sunday afternoons or might even pop in for a wedding or two!
