Come wine with us Christmas in July with Durbanville Hills at Reuben’s One and Only
Time really flies when you’re having fun! It’s been two and a half years since starting with only 6 people around a kitchen table, until today. With a constant following of clients coming to our events, we are just over a 1000 people in Cape Town alone!  For the month of July we decided to treat our followers with some very special DurbanvilleHills Rhinofield wines, at a very special restaurant called Reuben’s ,at the One and Only Hotel in Cape Town.
In South Africa we normally celebrate Christmas in summer, so having a ‘Christmas in July Theme’ was something that we definitely wanted to give a try. Cape Town tends to get a little cold and wet during the winter months, which makes us often want to hibernate and lie underneath the covers, but dressing up and going to the One and Only in the middle of the winter might just change our minds……….
In only two days, our event of 130 people was sold out! Yes, a Record! Thank you Cape Town! Its truly special having a following that loves what we do and most importantly believe in what we do.
Our evening started off with welcome drinks in the One and Only Vista bar, with the ever picture perfect view of Table Mountain.  A very fresh and flinty 2014 Sauvignon Blanc from Durbanville Hills was enjoyed by our guests. A wine that is very consistent and well known, that most of us are very familiar with and what makes Durbanville Hills famous.
Guest were very talkative and were getting ready for a great wine and dine evening out. One thing that I realized about the One and Only is that it had this overwhelming sense of pure opulence, which really makes a very bold statement. After our welcome drink, guests were escorted down to Reuben’s.
For some of you not familiar with South African chefs, Reuben Riffle is like the Gordon Ramsey of South Africa without all the swearing . Well known for his restaurant Reuben’s in Franschhoek and Reuben’s at the Robertson Small Hotel.  It was a real treat for all of us to be guests at Reuben’s One and Only.
Come wine with us had a meet and greet with wine maker Martin Moore and Reuben’s Sous Chef Chad, on the evening. The idea of our Christmas in July evening was to experience our five senses to the ultimate.
Our special guest for the evening was Luna Paige who is a very well known music artist both locally and internationally. Luna and Martin met a few weeks ago to chat about the wines. Luna wrote a song for each of the wine and food pairings which she played for us on the evening. What a treat !
According to scientific study, we tend to taste flavours differently as soon as music is incorporated. The wines that were presented on the evening was the Rhinofields range which is a top high end range that Durbanville Hills produces. Very few people know about this range but they produce a fantastic Chardonnay (one of the top 10 in the world) , Pinotage (No 1 this year with Decanter Wine Mag) and a very light Sauvignon Blanc Noble late wine that we thoroughly enjoyed on the evening.
For our meal, the starter was Pickled Kingklip served with meebos and coriander lentil salad. This was beautifully paired with the Rhinofields Chardonnay 2012.
The main course were something special and different for a change. Spiced slow cooked short rib accompanied by Parmesan polenta served with wild mushroom ragout and seasonal greens.
This dish was a firm favourite and really worked beautifully with the prize winner wine Rhinofields Pinotage 2012.
Last but not least was the dessert Pain d’epice crème brulee served with vanilla poached pear, honeycomb and pear sorbet. The delicious light Rhinofields Noble late harvest 2013 worked like a charm and was the winning pairing combo of the evening.
It’s really true what they say that people follow people.  At Come wine with us it really is about the people. If you haven’t joined us for one of our events, please make sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter to get first hand info on the latest events happening in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
